What is Backup Power?                 

A standby generator is permanently installed outdoors, much like an air-conditioning unit is. The generator operates on your home's existing fuel source - whether that's natural gas or liquid propane (LP).

The KOHLER standby power system includes the generator, automatic transfer switch, battery charger and distribution panel.

The transfer switch is the brain of your KOHLER backup power system. It continually monitors the utility power for an interruption. If utility power fails, the transfer switch automatically starts the generator, transfers the electrical loads and restores power to your home. When utility power resumes, the transfer switch reverses the process... again, automatically, whether you're home or away.

Simple to use, the KOHLER Advanced Digital Control (ADC) shows readings on output, battery voltage, oil pressure, engine hours, run conditions and system fault conditions, while providing precision power and password-secure access (currently offered on units 8 kW to 30 kW). In the unlikely event service is required, it can often be provided over the phone.

• Easy to install
The 8.5kW and 12kW units are equipped with a built-in mounting pad for reduced installation time and cost.

• Natural gas or LP fuel
Unlike portable generators that need to be refueled and manually started, KOHLER generator sets are fueled by your home's existing fuel source - natural gas or liquid propane (LP).

• UL-Listed
All KOHLER standby residential generators are UL tested and listed to UL 2200 for your safety and protection. KOHLER automatic transfer switches are UL tested and listed to UL 1008.

• Reliable
All KOHLER generator sets and components are prototype tested, factory built and production tested.

• Performance
Slightly larger than the main distribution panel, the automatic transfer switch exercises the generator weekly to keep it performing at peak efficiency.

Due to the cycling nature of many of these devices, any KOHLER® generator you select may not run all of the appliances simultaneously.
